EXERCISE IS MEDICINE

Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) work closely with medical professionals and other Allied Health Professionals including Physiotherapists, Podiatrists and Osteopaths to maximise the health outcomes of patients.

They hold a four year equivalent University degree and specialise in the exercise and management for the prevention and management of chronic disease and injuries.

Exercise Physiologists have a strong focus on the prevention of health issues and self-management strategies and work under the scope of using exercise as medicine. The aims of Exercise Physiology sessions are to prevent or manage acute, sub-acute or chronic disease or injury, and assist in restoring one’s optimal physical function, health or wellness. In order to be seen by an Exercise Physiologist, you can be referred by your doctor, specialist or another health professional.

The government now also recognises the need for increased support and treatment for patients who suffer from chronic diseases. AEPs are among the allied health professionals able to provide Medicare services to people with chronic and complex illnesses. The Enhanced Primary Care Plan (ECP) supports the use of AEPs through Medicare. Rebates are also available through the Department of Veteran Affairs and select private health insurers including BUPA, Medibank Private and Police Health (other insurers also cover Exercise Physiology so please check your individual cover).
